The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor just had its premiere at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. The new model represents an off-road version of the famous pickup truck, and its specs are truly impressive. The model was fully redesigned, leaving no aspect unchanged. The all-new Raptor is now much more attractive, aggressive, powerful and dominant. The designers at Ford really did an excellent job, and we are sure that the new model will make excellent sales. The 2017 F-150 Raptor comes with a new exterior and interior design, fully-equipped cabin, new bodywork and absolutely impressive powertrain. The latter suffered most changes and we must say that the new solution is way better than the previous one. All in all, the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is an impressive off-road vehicle which will surely amaze you on any terrain you throw at it.
New Body Architecture
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will come with new body specs. The underpinning will be made out of high-strength steel for extra support, while the rest of the body is made out of military-grade high-strength forged aluminum alloy. This way the designers managed to shave off 500 pounds, which will have an excellent impact on the model’s performance as well as its fuel economy. Also, the new Raptor grew a bit, as it is now 6 inches wider than the regular F-150. This will make it more stable on the off-road terrains and will improve the comfort of the passengers.
2017 Ford F-150 Raptor Exterior Design
Along with the body changes comes a new design. The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor now looks more modern and way more aggressive. Its body shape has been kept, but it was also improved with new details and elements. The new truck will keep some of the current model’s features, though improved, such as Ford stamped grille and fender flares. Front and rear bumper were also improved, and the appearance is finished with 17-inch wheels with next-gen BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires. The new 2017 F-150 Raptor truly looks amazing.
Interior Design & Technology
Opposite to the rough and aggressive exterior design, the interior looks much more soothing. Of course, it is still modern and attractive, but the design, materials and arrangement of the elements look really appealing and smooth. The cabin is comfortable and cozy, with seats which will surely make you off-road experience pleasant.
As for the gadgets, the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will be fully equipped. New features include paddle-shifters for the new transmission and roof-mounted switches for the additional systems offered.
Powertrain Changes – Say Hello to New Engine
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will use a new twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine instead of its current mill. Let us remind you, the current Raptor is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 mill which can generate 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque. The new unit is said to produce more power than the current one, though the exact specs are unknown at the time. However, the new mill will surely provide better performance, and since its displacement is smaller than the V8’s and the new performance truck is lighter than its previous counterpart, we can also expect better EPA fuel economy, too.
Long-Awaited New Transmission
The new EcoBoost mill will be mated with the new ten-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox was developed for trucks in Ford-GMC cooperation and it was long awaited. The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will be the first model to use it, and it is expected that other Ford and GMC models get it later on, including the Mustang.
New Drive Mode Specs
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will come with four-wheel drive as standard, of course, but this mode will also be improved. It will now feature a torque-on-demand case, which will provide better traction in all situations – on- and off-road, as well as in low and high speed. The new system will therefore provide a much more interesting and exciting drive than before.
Another system which will improve the performance of the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is the all-new Terrain Management System. This system improves the truck’s performance based on the road conditions.
2017 F-150 Raptor Drive Modes
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will come with six drive modes designed to present most of the model’s capabilities depending on the road conditions. The modes are: Normal, for everyday use; Street for high-performance on the road; Baja, for high-speed desert performance; Rock for slow and careful rock crawling; Mud and Sand for, well mud and send and Weather for snow, ice and rain.
Premiere & Release Date
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor had its premiere at the 2015 NAIAS. The release is scheduled for the fall 2016; so unfortunately, we will have to wait until we see one of these on the roads. The pricing will be announced close to the release.
