The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will have its debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. We wrote about this model some time ago, but now that we have more information about it, we can give you a better presentation of the future plug-in hybrid. The new Volt will, like we reported back in April, come with improved powertrain, which will surely make it more appealing and attractive to the customers, but also, it will come with improved and refreshed exterior and interior design. The design should be drastically changed and it will make the hatchback look much more attractive and modern. The new 2016 model will surely be more popular than its current counterpart; it will represent a true urban and innovative plug-in hybrid car, capable of tackling any road situation, as well as being comfortable, handsome and entertaining. The current Volt is rather successful itself, so you can only imagine how cool and famous the 2016 generation will be.
2016 Chevy Volt Design & Platform Changes
The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will come with some rather interesting changes, aside from the powertrain improvements everyone is talking about. The new five-door hatchback will also feature a brand new platform. This platform is designed especially for electric vehicles, so it should improve the model’s performance quite a bit. In addition, it will reduce the car’s weight, which will have a positive impact on its fuel efficiency. As for the exterior and interior design, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt will come with a drastic change. The new model will have little similarities with the current generation, as the redesign will affect most of its elements. Though the exact design is unknown at the time, there are some rumors about the appearance of the new plug-in hybrid. Reportedly, the design change will be so thorough that even the silhouette of the new model will be changed. Now, the 2016 Chevy Volt will look more modern, dominant and attractive. The new body shape will be more fluent and aerodynamic; the elements such as headlights, grille etc. will be more pronounced and with sharper edges and the overall impression will be simply stunning. As for the interior, similar changes will happen inside the hatchback as well, but there isn’t much information about them at the moment. Nevertheless, the new model will keep its cozy and comfortable cabin, as always, and the level of gadgetry and equipment will not disappoint.
Powertrain Specs – New Electric Motor with Dual Function
Let’s move on to the most important part of the redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Volt – its powertrain. The new hatchback will be using a newly developed conventional engine (we shall deal with this part later on) and two new electric motors with improved battery pack. The electric component of this setup comes with improved performance (well, they all do, but let’s talk about this now). The electric motors can both be used as generators and motors to power the vehicle. Of course, they can also be used simultaneously to power the hatchback, or work independently, but this joint function has improved their performance by 12 percent compared to the previous version. The electric motors share the stator, while they have separate rotors. This setup has reduced the system’s weight by 100 pounds, which is a rather significant change. Also, the new system will use a new battery pack, so its performance should be really interesting.
New & Improved Battery Pack
Another novelty about the new 2016 Chevy Volt will be its new battery pack. The new hatchback will use the battery which has an improved energy density, while its OEM will remain the same. The battery pack now holds 192 cells, while the previous one had 288, but their capacity is still the same. This technological advancement will reduce the model’s weight by 30 pounds, and therefore improve its performance. In addition, the new model will, thanks to this, have an extended driving range, though the estimated mileage hasn’t been announced yet.
2016 Chevrolet Volt Conventional Engine
As for the conventional part of this plug-in hybrid setup, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt will use the 1.5-liter four-cylinder EcoTec engine. This unit will is different from all other 1.5-liter four-banger EcoTec mill as it was developed especially for the Volt’s hybrid powertrain. Therefore, though it will have the basic elements and systems similar to those on other EcoTec units, its performance will be somewhat different from theirs. This way, the new engine, and the whole plug-in hybrid setup as well, will have an improved performance, better driving range in both all-electric and combined mode and will offer much more impressive overall driving experience. The new 2016 Chevy Volt will come with four driving modes, but their names and specs haven’t been announced yet.
Premiere & Release Date
The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will have its premiere at the 2015 NAIAS. Its release should happen in the second half of 2015. As for the price, though there isn’t any official information at the moment, the new model is said to come with slightly decreased price compared to the current model. With this price reduction, as well as all the aforementioned changes, it is clear that the manufacturer is not kidding and that it is determined to make the new Volt one of the most popular and best offered plug-in hybrid hatchbacks on the market.
