The 2015 Toyota FCV will be released in the mid next year. The new model will represent a sort of revolution as Toyota’s officials claimed that the future of automotive technology lies in the fuel cell tech on numerous occasions. The FCV, whose name stands for Fuel Cell Vehicle, might get a different name once it hit the market. However, what won’t be changed is it appearance in comparison to the one presented at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show where FCV concept had its premiere. This is a bit unexpected due to the fact that the production models usually look more modest than the concepts they have originated from. Since Toyota decided not to follow this unwritten rule, we can only imagine how important this project is to them. The new model will have a unique and unusual exterior, very comfortable and well-equipped cabin, and most importantly, a completely green powertrain. The FCV will have zero pollution rates, but it will offer all other conveniences as any four-seat sedan with conventional drivetrain. This means that the potential buyers are not only those who are eco-conscious, but also all the drivers that want a quality family vehicle. As for the USA market, the car will be released in California first, since this state decided to make a huge investment in building one hundred hydrogen stations within a decade, while it will have its very first world release in Japan, of course.
2015 Toyota FCV Appearance
The 2015 Toyota FCV will have an unusual and interesting appearance. Unlike any other model available these days, the new technology sedan will bring new design cues to depict its differences. The model looks very futuristic, with almost weirdly shaped front end which is dominated by air intakes and bumper, located under thin and narrow headlights. Looking at it from aside, the car is very aerodynamic and bold, while its rear end completes the full looks. The model is perhaps not something everyone will find attractive, but no one can argue the fact that it is innovative and in accordance to its nature. The car will be very light-weighted and even though the exact amount isn’t announced, it is said to weigh as much as the new Prius does. Speaking of the Prius, another thing these two models have in common is the fact that Prius too looked very odd when it was first released. Just like that, the people will surely take into the FCV, since the car is definitely a prediction of future automotive course. The 2015 Toyota FCV will be the first fuel cell vehicle sold in the USA, since its competition are only two more models: the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, which can only be leased, and a Honda model which will also be released next year, but after Toyota FCV.
FCV’s Fuel-cell Powertrain Explained
The most interesting aspect of the 2015 Toyota FCV is its powertrain. The fuel cell car uses compressed hydrogen to power its motor. The FCV will use two hydrogen tanks, a small battery and a boost converter which will increase the power sent to the motor. The battery will help the powertrain during the high-powered drive, while it will store energy when its help is not needed. This powertrain is very silent, and thanks to the redesigned technologies and huge efforts from Toyota part, it is as compact as it can be, so the new model can easily accommodate all four passengers as well as carry their luggage. The fuel cell powertrain is similar to the hybrid one, except in two things. Firstly, the tanks can be refilled in three minutes, which is as much time as you need to fill the conventional gas-tanks for example. Compared to the electric cars and plug-in hybrids, this is a huge advantage since their refill time is significantly longer. On the other hand, while there are many easy ways to refill the juice for any car on different energy source, there are not so many hydrogen stations around the world, so this can be a serious problem for those who live far from the current stations or wish to go on long-distance journeys. Other than that, the fuel cell vehicles are just as good as any other powertrain models. The new 2015 Toyota FCV drivetrain tech will produce around 100 kW, which is around 140 horsepower. This will accelerate the car from zero to sixty in roughly ten seconds, while its driving range will be 430 miles.
2015 Toyota FCV Release And Estimated Price
The 2015 Toyota FCV will have its very first release in Japan next year. There, it will cost seven million yen, which is around $69,000. The model will be released in USA in the mid 2015, after the Japan release, and it should cost a bit less than the price mentioned above, since the model will be more expensive in Japan. The model will be released in California first, as they are currently developing hydrogen stations, but in the future, we are sure that the fuel cell technology will be as conventional as any other. In our opinion, it is a much better way of powering a vehicle than any other, as it is eco-friendly as much as it is possible, while at the same time it offers all the perks we are used to with gasoline and diesel models: the same amount of power, the same refill time, silent and comfortable journey and an excellent driving range.
