The new i8 is an extraordinary coupe with specifications that sound almost too good to be true. To start with, this amazing car of the future has an outstanding and striking exterior. Also, the interior is made of only the best quality materials, so the journey could be as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. The most fascinating part of this model is its powertrain. The 2015 BMW i8 has it all, from fantastic performance, easiest possible handling to unbelievable fuel economy. The designers took a huge leap ahead of their competition when they came up with such a fascinating powetrain that consist of two electric motors and one small gasoline engine. The only downside to this coupe is its price, that is unreachable to, well, almost everybody, but truth be told, a car unique as this one is, deserves a just as equally unique driver.

2015 BMW i8 Exterior

The 2015 BMW i8 is a car that will certainly get everyone’s attention no matter where it is. Its exterior is futuristic, bold and dominant, just like everything else about it. The new model certainly has some basic lines and ideas seen on every BMW vehicle, which was expected and that is always a plus, but these traditional elements got a new perspective. For example, the new 2015 i8 has a kidney grille, like any other BMW model, but its grille is slimmer and more futuristic. In addition, the new coupe has a LifeDrive Architecture platform. This platform has its passengers’ compartment made out of carbon fiber, while the structure that holds the powertrain and chassis is made of aluminum. This way, the car is light and easier to handle. Moreover, the new i8 has swan-wing doors, LED headlights and taillight. The headlights are also called laser, since they shed a very bright light, which BMW is proud to have presented first. In addition, another detail each BMW has is the long wheelbase, which, combined with the height of this car, gives this hybrid a sporty, aggressive and intimidating look. The new 2015 i8 is 184.3 inches long, 76.5 inches wide and 51 inch tall. All in all, this is a coupe you would definitely notice while passing by you. Its extravagant looks combined with futuristic features and the perfect blend of tradition and modern ideas make this car outshine any other.

2015 BMW i8 Interior

The new 2015 BMW i8 looks just as stunning from the inside as it does from the outside. The cabin is sophisticated, elegant and modern. It can accommodate four adult passengers. The material used for the upholstery is high quality leather tanned with olive leaf extract that makes it look very natural. In addition, the passengers’ compartment is separated from the boot with two layers of special glass for amazing acoustics. The new coupe comes with an 8.8-inch touchscreen, all the necessary equipment (and more than necessary), and an iDrive infotainment system that is easy to handle.  Everything inside this model is designed and positioned in such manner to ensure the easiest possible access to it.

2015 BMW i8 Powertrain

Like we said earlier, the powertrain that runs the 2015 BMW i8 is absolutely amazing. It consists of a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder TwinPower engine and two electric motors. The engine is placed at the rear end, has a 25psi turbo charger and can produce 228 horsepower and 236lb-ft of torque. The first electric motor is a 280V one that generates 20 horsepower and is used to help charge the battery. Another electric engine is set at the front of the vehicle and produces 129hp and 184lb-ft of torque. With such powertrain and additional modern technology that syncs it, the new 2015 BMW i8 can produce a total of 360 horsepower and 420lb-ft of torque. It accelerates to 60mph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds and its top speed is limited to 155mph. Furthermore, the new model will have a 6.0-kWh lithium-ion battery that takes 3.5 hours to recharge if plugged to an 110V outlet. Also, there will be higher-voltage charging equipment that will reduce this time while at the same time enabling the driver to connect its smartphone and adjust certain parameters inside the vehicle.

2015 BMW i8 Transmission, Drive & Driving Modes

As for the transmission, the gasoline engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, while the electric motor uses a 2-speed automatic one. Given the layout of the engine and the motor, there are differences when it comes to drive mode depending on which of these two are you using. Naturally, the electric mode will have a front-wheel drive, given that the motor is placed at the front, while the gasoline engine uses rear-wheel drive. But that’s not all. As you can anticipate, when you combine these two parts of the powertrain, you get an all-wheel drive. We told you at the beginning of this article, this coupe has it all. Moreover, the hybrid mode comes with Eco Pro, Sport and Comfort drive modes, while the electric one offers Eco Pro and Comfort. As for the fuel consumption, there are still no official figures announced, but some rumors claim they will be quite satisfactory. The 2015 BMW i8 can travel 22 miles at 75mph when using its electric motor only.
